Use Your Voice (Opinion)

Today’s post will be based on my opinion and understanding of the world around me. It will center on our own ability to utilize our voice effectively to enact change around us. Often times the way in which we use our voice to create change is not enough to do much. It may create awareness of the issue at hand but doesn’t do much to actually change the situation. By now you should have gained that this is directed at those individuals that protest and stop right there. There is nothing wrong with protesting but after the protest what is next? Do you feel like you’ve done everything that could have been done or are you left feeling like there’s more you can do? If you felt like you’ve done enough, this isn’t for you however if you feel like there’s more, continue on.

Suggestion 1

My first suggestion would be to get involved with your local community. I’m not sure about other states but in New York City we are separated by districts. Each of those districts have a community board that focus on the needs of their community. By involving yourselves in this monthly discussion (normally the 3rd Wednesday of each month), you allow yourselves to have a say in what is happening in the community around you. Often, I would hear people complain about trash not being picked up as it should or safety in their community. This would allow you to be part of the solution process rather than just making complaints.

Suggestion 2

Another suggestion that I would make would be to get involved with local politics. People like to say that their vote doesn’t matter when it has to do with major elections such as the presidency. I could go into depth about this but this post isn’t for that. By voting in local elections such as mayor, governor, etc. you allow yourself to be part of the governing process. However, it should not stop there. Hold these elected officials accountable for what they promised. Our voice is a lot stronger than we give it credit for. In my job, if my clients don’t like how my services are provided there are steps in place to rectify my behavior. The same steps are in place for these elected officials.

Wrap-Up

Many people don’t like to use their voice for fear of retaliation and it’s an unfortunate reality of life. I’m not asking anyone to do anything they don’t want to do or anything they aren’t comfortable with. I’m asking everyone (if they want to do more) to actually see what they can do to enact change. I know people that have started their own podcasts or their own non-profit organization. These are other examples of ways to utilize your voice to enact the change you want to see in your life. At the end of the day this is my own opinion and if there are any issues or concerns please feel free to leave a comment and we can discuss.
